He proposes a Bottom-like analogy between stage construction and acting... note his continued emphasis on "professionalism." But his tone and his language suggest that he believes himself superior to this "hard-handed m[a]n... which never labored in [his]mind"(MSND 5.1.72-73).
Bonus: dada-esque techno remix of Bale's profanity-laced tirade

ReplyDeleteMy sister and her husband work on movie sets. (She's a set decorator and he's a gardener... rude mechanicals?) Given what they've told me over the years, what the DP (director of photography) did was really dumb. He didn't walk into the scene while the camera was rolling, which is a direct waste of time and money as the take would not be usable. But he did walk into Bale's frame of vision, and then after apparently being warned about it, he did it again. Which would be distracting, and then on top of that irritating. And then the guy seems to keep egging him on rather than just walk away.
ReplyDeleteBut of course, that alone does not justify the ferocity of the response. As the Joker would say, "why so serious?" Which is why, although he insists on professional equivalence, comparing "your lights" to "my scene," for Bale to really defend his action he would have to say that the scene required a great deal of emotional intensity for him to imagine himself in the world of the Terminator, and that emotional intensity spilled over into his tirade... he basically does say this. (And notice his voice shifting back and forth from the character's American accent to Bale's British accent.) But this is a claim that acting is a special form of mental labor, right? Not to mention the practical inequity of their situation... it's a lot easier to fire a $3k/week director of production than a $300k/week actor! So who's more likely to have the hissy fit and get away with it?
