Class #26 Postgame

REGARDING THE POLL ON THE LEFT: I think a few of the votes might have been deleted somehow. Try again if you don't think yours got on there.

SIGNUP FOR FRIDAY REVIEW SESSION: Here.

BLOG HOMEWORK: One thing/person/activity that is cool, and one that is not cool. And why. With links, if possible. (Post below.) And for god's sake please catch up on your reading (CR 102-05, 114-31) so we can have a lively class discussion. For your reference, here are Lupton's study questions about Davis, Mitchell, and Gladwell (ignore De Botton), and some more questions about Gladwell.

TWO PEER REVIEWS DUE BY WEDNESDAY: Unless of course your partner doesn't get you a draft by then, in which case your deadline for the peer review will be extended. You can either put them in the Paper #6 shared student dropbox, or c.c. me on the email, or show them to me on paper.

CONNECTIONS BETWEEN JACOBS AND PREVIOUS COURSE MATERIAL:

As discussed in class today. Hey wait, broad concepts that link various parts of the course together... that sounds like...

1) Planned vs. improvised uses, new meanings emerging from new contexts, regulating or censoring the arts

2) Individual vs. collective creation, and what it has to do with theories of what counts as "art" and "artists"

3) Depictions of rural vs. urban life, and what ideological function they serve

OTHER JACOBS TIDBITS:

Here's the objection to Slumdog Millionaire that Lupton mentioned.

60's era video reminiscent of Jacobs. And another.

And here's what President Obama thinks about The Death and Life of Great American Cities.

NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN PORTRAIT OF SHAKESPEARE DISCOVERED: Here. Also, a somewhat different use of the term "authentic."

  1. Something "uncool"

    http://blog.pennlive.com/lvsports/2008/01/tattoos.jpg

-I think tattoos, for the most part, are uncool. Unless someone has some kind of history or story to tell with their tattoo, I don't think they are particularly "neat". For instance, if someone wanted to remember a lost family member through a tattoo, fine, but is someone decides to get a tattoo of a butterfly on their back just because, I don't think it is cool. Sorry if someone has a butterfly tattoo : /

    Something cool:

    http://www.metacafe.com/watch/330861/christmas_lights_timed_to_music/

-Though this is completely unrelated to tattoos, i thought it would be appropriate as it relates to houses and neighborhoods. This link is of a house at Christmas time that has lights blinking to Christmas music. I think this is a really cool idea as it takes decorating one step further. There is a similar house by my neighborhood that has taken this concept to the next level and had their Christmas lights blink to music from a radio station tuned to their house. This way, cars could sit out in front of the house and listen to the music while still seated in their cars. They also had WAY more lights, but this was a good example for some kind of idea of what I am talking about.

  2. 1. One cool thing/activity/person

    Runway models: http://allsorts.typepad.com/allsorts/images/2008/02/08/fashion.jpg

Runway models are “cool” because the way they dress is not something that one sees every day. They do not copy others’ styles (mostly because they are dressed by professional designers for fashion shows). They have styles of their own, and other people copy their styles.

    2. Uncool

    http://images.buycostumes.com/mgen/merchandiser/19922.jpg

The era of bell bottoms ended in the 90’s. It would be embarrassing and uncool to wear bell bottoms like these today.

  4. One thing/person/activity that is cool, and one that is not cool. And why. With links, if possible.

I think skateboarding is cool but longboarding is even more cool. Longboarding is a whole separate culture from skateboarding. It requires skill and athleticism just like skateboarding but it is faster and the board is heavier. Here is a picture of a longboard, http://z.about.com/d/skateboard/1/0/o/K/DSC04320.jpg. the best way to see how cool longboarding really is, is to watch it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVkR7fevoB4&feature=related

Smoking is not cool. I can not stand it when people smoke. It does not make you look cool. It makes you look stupid because you are knowingly killing yourself. you are purposfully lowering your chances at a full life. Also the secondhand smoke is disgusting. It polutes the air that other non smokers have to walk through. It is disgustingly unhealthy, smelly, costly, and pointless. Smoking is uncool. http://www.cartoonstock.com/newscartoons/cartoonists/gcu/lowres/gcun6l.jpg

  5. Cool: Code Geass

Top-notch anime, quote below is from Wikipedia.

"Since its premiere, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion has collected numerous awards and accolades. At the sixth annual Tokyo Anime Awards held at the 2007 Tokyo International Anime Fair, Code Geass won the best TV anime series award.[5] In noted Japanese anime magazine Animage's 29th Annual Anime Grand Prix, Code Geass won the most popular series award, with Lelouch Lamperouge also being chosen as the most popular male character and "Colors" being chosen as the most popular song. In the 30th Annual Anime Grand Prix, Lelouch won first place again and C.C. was voted most popular female character. At the first Seiyū Awards held in 2007, Jun Fukuyama won the award for best actor in a leading role for his performance as Lelouch Lamperouge in the series, while Ami Koshimizu won the award for best actress in a supporting role for her performance as Kallen Stadtfeld. Furthermore, Code Geass won the award for Best TV Animation at the twelfth Animation Kobe event, held annually in Kobe, Hyōgo Prefecture,[6] with R2 taking the award in the following year.[41]

Anime News Network's columnist Todd Ciolek attributes the soaring popularity of Code Geass to "the series hitting every important fan sector," with the audience appeal points ranging from a "complex cast of characters and a fast-paced story, told with Goro Taniguchi's capable direction" for "general-interest fans" to "pretty and just-a-little-broken heroes" for "yaoi-buying female fans."[42]

Reportedly, Bandai Visual shipped over one million DVD and Blu-ray discs related to the Code Geass franchise by November 2008, placing it among the most popular contemporary anime series in both Japan and North America.[43]"

    Uncool:

Genki Living: There's this really awesome crepe place in Garden Grove called Genki Living. It's cool because it's a very strange, quirky, and a somewhat "ghetto" place. Not that many people know about it, but it makes really yummy crepes and the people who work there are super nice. What makes the environment so awesome here is that the store is entirely comprised of artwork. From the floor to the walls, Genki Living is a place that you will never get bored. The floor has acrylic painted figures, and the walls also have neat things painted on them. They have old school video games like pac man, and one of the walls is ornamented with nike shoes, in all different colors and styles. There are couches and a flat screen for people to watch sports. Overall, it's a pretty cool place to hang out.

    UNCOOL:

    http://gnuhaus.com/jordan/images/ponchos.jpg

ponchos: I remember ponchos being the "in" thing in middle school. It was a temporary fashion trend, but I knew it wouldn't last. It just looks so ugly and doesn't accentuate the body. I could probably make it with a big piece of cloth and a pair of scissors. UGH. ugly.

  9. Cool: Piercings
    http://www.mookychick.co.uk/images/style/piercing_lip_eyebrow.jpg
Getting some sort of piercing seems to be very cool and trendy these days. Many girls have decided to get lip piercings or even a "monroe piercing" (the one that is above the lip). Many guys also have their ears pierced, and few others have gotten "plugs". There are many other piercings available these days such as snake-bites, naval, tragius, industrial, corset, neck, eyebrow, etc.

    Uncool: Fish n Flush
    http://dailygizmo.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/shop-fishnflush-big1.jpg
I'm actually unsure if this is deemed uncool or just kinda weird. But apparently this is an aquarium-toliet. I guess people can decide if its cool or not.

DANCING! I think hip-hop, folk, jazz, contemporary, ballet, basically every genre of dance is cool. The link I provided is a hip-hop dance battle between my favorite Korean band. I think it is cool because it takes confidence, skills, discipline, and a passion to pursue dancing. Dancing can also be very expressive. I enjoy dancing myself but I'm not very good at it.

    Uncool:

Arrogance. I feel uncomfortable and annoyed when people think too much of themselves. And more than often, I feel that they impose their views as something definite and no one else is right.

Sarah, if you go enter the working draft #6, you'll no only see assignment return/submission but also the share student files. Sign into you're "myEEE" then scroll down to "mydropbox"

    i hope that helps :]]

    cool: digital art

Digital art has become very popular with the advent of digital cameras, tablets, and programs like Photoshop, OpenCanvas, Paintshop Pro, etc. The skills and whatnot that are required for digital art are much the same as for traditional art but it makes some effects easier and allows people to create new effects, especially with things like animation and 3D art.

    uncool: plastic surgery

In most Western cultures, at least, plastic surgery is seen as something that is uncool. We don't like and try not to be superficial people, so unless the plastic surgery is reconstructive (burn victims for example), it's considered uncool.

  12. Cool: Riding Fixed

It's different than your normal bike. It's faster, lighter, looks cooler, and will actually motivate you to get off your ass every once in a while. This is my bike, and I've been riding non-stop since this quarter started.

  13. I really don’t know what I consider to be uncool in today’s world but I do know what I consider to be cool: 80’s pop icons!!! So I’m just gonna stick to that era if that’s okay.
    Example of Cool:
    http://www.quizilla.com/user_images/G/GwenGurl/1055288423_ClubBender.jpg
John Bender is epitomizes cool because he is the ultimate rebel. He doesn’t care about getting into trouble or what people think of him. However, his personality is shaped in part by his abusive home life which is what makes him relatable to his peers as we discover in the movie. Bender is one of the most memorable characters in The Breakfast Club because of his erratic and humorous behavior.
    Example of uncool:
    http://hubatka.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/duranduran.jpg
The headbands, not Duran Duran. Headbands to me are uncool because they just look ridiculous especially when worn outside the gym! For the most part I love the fashion of the 1980s, but headbands, c’mon, really? But Duran Duran is awesome!

    Rent the musical.
I watched it last week in Hollywood off-broadway and it was phenomenal. I really love how it deals with serious issues that are relevant today (AIDS and poverty) and sets them to music... in a way like Porgy and Bess.

    http://justinmoss.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/rolling-stone-stephen-colbert-the-daily-show-38768_344_344.jpg
The Daily Show & Colbert Report
-A large number of young people are undoubtedly politically illiterate; most of us don't watch the news or read newspapers, especially with other shows on television or the Internet (Facebook, fmylife, etc.) to distract us. A good number of us, however, still recognize the importance of being politically aware (ha ha maybe) and both these shows have become our source for news. Forget CNN (actually...I think we watch this also), MSNBC (do we watch this?), C-SPAN, FOXNews (though most of us wouldn't be watching something that leans more on the conservative side)--we've got Comedy Central! Both shows also make fun of conservative politics...which we like. They became so...popular all of a sudden, but it seems that people prefer The Colbert Report over The Daily Show. I personally find them equally good :D

  18. "much more alert face" & "more intelligent and sympathetic" = Shakespeare? Interesting. It doesn't really say how they figured it was Shakespeare...The man in the painting actually looks to have a physically longer face than the print of Shakespeare--the one other "widely accepted as genuine likeness of Shakespeare."

  21. Cool: Hip-hop
Hip-hop isn't just posturing, grabbing your nuts and flaunting your wealth. There are tracks that I find to be thought-provoking and inspiring, it's just a matter of exploring the medium.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjflFJcAWL0
Like, Biggie's song "Juicy" is one of the most inspiring things I've heard. It might seem insipid or dumb or whatever if you're listening to it, but to someone who grew up in that kind of deprived environment, they can relate to a lot of what he says, and to see someone like that rise up in society says a lot.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjqTiQhOgU8
This is one of the sickest tracks I've heard. To be able to write something like that and then to perform it is really really cool to me.

What's not cool: Deeming things cool.
Seriously? Reading that article about cool finders? People that galavant around the country and taking the opinions of "cool kids," who get money so they can buy fifty pairs of sneakers a month? While at the same time there are literally college-educated people, those that struggled from the bottom and trying to claw their way to the top, these are the kind of people that are unemployed?

    Damn, what the hell.

But anyway, the whole concept of cool and using it to shift people around is... really uncool to me. That notion of what, "innovators" being copied by the masses, and that's supposed to be cool? That same mode of thinking is the reason why dictators can subvert entire nations to their will and lead them around like puppets. It's just dumb to me. It's like, okay cool. Converses. You want to rock them. But stop trying to market style and individuality, kay? I just want to do my own thing, cool or not.

I don't really know what could constitute my second concept. Ummmm I'm just going to post this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XP5lz2CYNR4
A bunch of non-Japanese making generalizations of a culture based upon aspects of it they find cool? Yeah actually that one works.

  22. Graffitti Art :)
    http://www.weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/banksy-stencil-guerilla-street-art.jpg

There's just something about this type of art that makes me smile. Banksy is one of my all time favorite graffitti artists, he can turn any wall into a masterpiece in my eyes. This type of art forces people to think on their own and sometimes the best graffiti comes from unplanned random drawing when you're bored. It incorporates various colors, pictures, and makes you use your own creativity to create your own piece of wonderful.

Grills...not the kind you cook on
    http://www.aolcdn.com/red_galleries/teeth-flavor-flav-400a071807.jpg
I think these look ridiculous and anyone who wears one, SERIOUSLY and not just for pretend/for fun/part of a costume, is making complete fools out of themselves.

  23. For what is cool, I am stuck between hip hop dancing and Chinese traditional dancing. Although both dances are very different, they're both very admirable to look at. It takes many years of devotion to perfect these dances. Hip hop dancing is cool because of way how the dancers dress and the way how they move certain body parts. On the other hand, people say Chinese traditional dancing is beautiful, but I think it's cool: like hip hop, dancers also move at a certain way which normal people cannot do unless you have a lot of practice.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uL1rB0GPIhI&feature=related

I don't think smoking is cool at all. Not only is it bad for your health, it's also not aesthetic. It gives you yellow teeth and stinky breath. It gives you a raspy voice and sleepy eyes. What especially ticks me off is to see singers smoking. Don't they realize that singing really damages their voice?!
